    The Deep Throat Hypocrisy

So the news is out - Mark Felt, former deputy chief of the FBI admitted to being the Deep Throat source who leaked secrets during the Watergate scandal. Since Nixon was a Republican this scandal and Nixon's cover-up was great news to Democrats (who love to assassinate a rival's character). But what was really lost in the entire political BS that happened back then?
TRUST. Trust that a person in a position of trust (deputy chief of the FBI) would hold to that trust expected of him or her. Instead of taking any issues through the proper and legal channels this untrustworthy person decided to puke it all to the media (hmm - sounds like some current events) as a personal vendetta against Nixon. Obviously Mr. Felt decided to take the course he did knowing the possible political ramifications - something he obviously had no problems with since his thirst for revenge against Nixon not advancing him to full chief position.
I have no respect for someone that violates a trust. We hear of reporters going to jail in order to protect their sources - even if their source is some terrorist or murderer. Reporters have, to some extent, an honor system of trust. To me Mark Felt is scum, and I'd hope any of his family is marked as scum (since they knew the truth and covered it up as well) - not worthy of any job where trust is required.
For the record Mr. Felt did not bring Nixon down - Nixon did that on his own. Just like Clinton lying brought impeachment to his doorstep had Nixon just admitted whatever and took the slap on the wrist it would have been all put behind him, no problem.
So where is the hypocrisy? Mr. Felt felt it was wrong for President Nixon to cover-up his error, yet Mr. Felt thought it was perfectly justifiable, as well as critical to his own career, to cover-up his own error. He knew what he was doing and had done was wrong, but relied - even took extreme steps - to make sure his illegalities remained covered up. Well Mr. Felt, you can go to your grave knowing you are a hypocritical scumbag.

Come now, you can't be serious?

Nixon's cover-up was great news to Democrats (who love to assassinate a rival's character)

And Republicans don't? Let's not be partisan here. Both sides do it constantly. It's part of the Washington "game".

Did you miss the GOP hatchet job on Clinton (who certainly deserved a lot of it) during the 90s? Or Edmund Muskie? Or Thomas Eagleton? Or any one of the Kennedy's?

Do such character assassinations somehow not count in your book?

Hmm. You seem to have a bona fide and pronounced one-sided view of history.

The post and the event involved a Republican president. My remarks were in the context of that event and, unless someone wants to read something else into them, do not represent any exclusivity against only Democrats.

This guy was pissed at Nixon for not making him the director of the FBI, thus his motive. I agree with you about trust. The world is turning into selfish place with each person just concerned about themselves. Will trust and honor ever return?

I totally agree pundit - you have eyes to see. This exposure of the identity of DT will also expose those that: have no problem with criminals being praised as heros, of crime itself, don't hold trust as anything important, etc. So any surprise that the majority of those that praise a criminal are those we consider "on the left"?

I agree with anonymous - this was a person with a grudge against Nixon and he used his position of trust to execute his attack. He could have taken it directly to the Justice department - especially in his position, but it was a matter of personal revenge. He also saw an opportunity to "get in good" with a well know (big) media giant (at that time). In the process of it all he lied, he violated his FBI confidentiality contract, he covered up, etc.

Ask yourself: Why did he not seek to have Nixon prosecuted? Maybe because his boss, John Mitchell, was Nixon's number one bitch?

Well actually spike48 that is the rumor that Kennedy/Kerry bitches are trying to spread. In reality, there were various bosses (directors) the FBI had during the time of watergate - just check the facts at the www.fbi.gov site so you don't just take my word for it.

Now as a bitch of the left are you aware that Felt himself was convicted in 1980 of authorizing illegal break-ins (later to be pardoned by Reagan)? Instead of liberal drool perhaps you might spread some reality and truth? Or perhaps that's (truth) is not what da bitches of da left do huh?

Maybe you don't understand how federal grand juries work, but if the head DOJ official, that is, in this case, the Attorney General, won't authorize one, it doesn't happen.

On a more substantive level, it appears that you are upset because Deep Throat did not keep the dirty secrets of the Nixon cabal. So what?

What I find very interesting is that your (spike48) and "trey smith" posts are coming into my "SpamBayes" (http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/) filter as "Junk Suspects". Now that's what I call machine intelligence!

But as far as your comment your interpretation is wrong. I have no problem with illegal actions on either Republican or Democrat sides being tried. So once again, your assumptions and conclusions are wrong. Keep digging a hole for yourself - we enjoy watching lefties do that!

Wonderful post, and comments...quite an education for me...I have been following the Felt expose in the news the last few days... I am afraid I find it rather blase, simply because the corruption, selling out and personal power mongering is nothing compared to what is going on in the Canadian political scene right now.
Good news is, that Americans still have the capacity to be appalled at this kind of behind the scenes corruption and backroom dealing, while we Canadians have become inured, after decades of liberal lies, theft and dishonor, to most forms of wrongdoing. Amazing how used one can become used to perfidy when it is perceived as the price of doing business...

I agree that Felt is a scumbag. He should come to Canada, PM Martin would give him a Ministerial post...

Ty simoncat. After Nixon left office (his own undoing for lying about the breakin - party snooping) he testified as a character witness for Felt - all the time Felt knowing what a scumbag he really was. Apples to apples Nixon comes out a far more honorable statesman that Felt.

Some in this country label Felt as a hero - they are the ones that label themselves as supporters of scumbags. Simple huh? Seems like Americans know who the scumbags are but I don't understand why something more isn't being done to change things for the good people.

Felt might be too old for your PM - a walking (barely) rotting piece of scum. I'd feel sad if he did go to Canada - I like Canada and you'all don't deserve him! Ey?

I have no idea what SpamBayes is. However, if spike48 & I are on it, then it must be alerting folks toward intelligent commentary.

By the way, your site asks, "Where's your brain?" Mine is in my skull. After perusing your site, my question is: Where's yours?
