NASA successfully launched space shuttle Discovery today (mission STS-114) - hopefully marking a fresh commitment back to extreme goals (like going back to the moon and landing humanoids on Mars) for us as a nation, and globally as a species.In the early days of NASA the astronauts were pretty much all United States military pilots. In the shuttle launched today the crew is mixed - males and females, young and old, USA citizens and astronauts from other countries (Soichi Noguchi from Japan, Andy Thomas from South Australia, and Charles Camarda who grew up in Queens, N.Y. - well almost another country). You can read their bios for yourself - they are people with the right stuff. Their early years were filled with curiosity, achievement, adventure, exploration, and expectations. They pushed themselves harder than others, they achieved more than others because they put the effort in - totally contrary to the framework of socialism.
NASA spent more than $1 billion on safety upgrades since the ill-fated Columbia's return from space. I'm sure there will be many blogs, many liberals, and many socialists that will press for a reduction - if not full termination - of NASA as a government agency. In their selfish and short-sighted goals they fail to grasp the big picture. The trillions of dollars, the millions of jobs, the enormous technological advances - all because of a species aiming for unachievable goals - and then achieving them. We need technological advances if we ever expect to survive peacefully - alternate fuel options, medical advances, etc. Making a smaller I-Pod with more memory will not impact our survival - I'm talking about inventions, totally new discoveries.
What of that $15 billion spent on AIDS to Africa? Where does that money really go? What about the billions spent on social programs? These massive handouts achieve nothing in the long term - other than perhaps make a few corrupt leaders rich. When the first man landed on the moon it was an achievement of a species - just check the historic news reports from around the world. We need, as a species, to aim for those impossible goals once again. The international space station is just a tiny start, and todays launch should be a reminder how we, as a species, can get back on our feet - learn from mistakes - and make a stronger surge forward.

Gee, I went away for 3 days of R & R with my wife. I return to see that you are still insulting people. Does this make you feel like a better person -- does belittling the opinions of others provide you with a sense of worth? [It's sad.]
Don't be [sad] trey, the unions are striking on each other, the stock market is higher than ever, the USA has one of the lowest unemployment levels of the world, we're about to get a Supreme Court judge with a brain, the Boy Scouts can have meetings at military bases, we're killing barbarians that have no problem blowing up the little bodies of children - I'm rather happy!

If you're such a happy camper, then why do you insist on belittling people who don't happen to agree with you? It's fine to attack a person's position, but you have a penchant for attacking the people themselves. Generally speaking, people who feel a need constantly to attack others are merely deluding themselves if they say they are happy. In truth, they're miserable and the manner by which they choose to communicate is an apt tip-off to their genuine state of mind.
