The art of invention has died and extreme oil prices could be the spark that brings needed change.
When you think about it society has stagnated into a global blob of socialism - and as I have preached on my site - socialism quenches innovation.
Take computers for example - they still compute the same old fashion binary way. Sure, the electronics have become more efficient and smaller with the side-effect of speed increases, but the technology is the same.
Or even how we travel using machines - the archaic concept of movement by ignition propels everything from airplanes and passenger vehicles to those god-awful lazy person's yard blowers. Even the way we launch rockets or shoot a missile still relies on ancient discoveries. Add into those archaic concept bio-fuels - still the same burn-and-roll Flintstone combustion machines.
I've posted before about JFK's challenge to do the impossible - go to the moon within a given timeframe. A world leader - seeing beyond the routine and mundane - setting high goals never achieved before, and American's accomplishing and meeting that goal.
The technology advancements and discoveries were huge - orders of magnitudes about the initial costs involved with achieving that goal.
I believe it's time for America to set some impossible goals - to create propulsion beyond the archaic. Let other countries drink their gas and oil and let's move to once again drink the champagne of achievement.
If you believe such a goal to be impossible then you are certainly not qualified to be part of the team of discovery. America thrives (use to) on invention, of doing the impossible, and of advancing the human race.

Some Tech Stuff
Yesterday the FCC auctioned some airwaves that netted nearly $20 billion bucks for the Fed. Many of the airwave frequencies and bands are for broadband wireless networks. I have Comcast and I hate wired access, especially the fact there no competition where I live. Some areas closer to the city core have a choice of ClearWire - a wireless broadband service, but not so speedy.
Speed is relative, and because of your wonderful oppressive government Americans have one of the slowest broadband infrastructures in the world. For example, the fastest DSL is about 3.0 Mbps (million bits per second). Comcast cable averages 6 Mbps (sustained). Compare that with Japan - with an average of over 60 Mbps and S. Korea over 45 Mbps! Heck, even little Poland provides almost 10 Mbps.
Our government is our worse enemy, limiting the advances many businesses have been waiting years to unravel. When I go to Japan I see then and there the technologies that Americans will enjoy - but several years later. To Americans, it's all presented as something new and they gobble it up. In reality, it's old technology - sort of hand-me-down junk - and Japan has progressed to something newer.
Our technology doesn't limit America's innovation - the government does. I hate government mandates, intrusions and manipulations - can you tell?

Who Can Save Humanity?
If you've read my posts it's pretty obvious I'm a person that believes in human ingenuity and the human drive and freedom to accomplish the impossible. It's pretty obvious I hold no faith or hope in governments - no matter the country.
Government, as an entity, has never advanced the human race, nor has any government ever advanced the human species. As government grows larger and increasingly socialistic it only perpetuates our decline.
Perhaps those dreams of decades ago of all the great technology that we'd be enjoying now (flying cars, cars running of something other than oil, vacations to Mars, etc.) would have come to pass if governments stayed smaller and allowed private enterprise and the free spirit to flourish - but governments grew and are more oppressive than ever.
Growing government has forced the focus FROM dreaming outwards where a better future for all resides, TO a focus inward - on self - reducing the vision that would evolved our species. A better destiny has been stumped in favor of, what amounts to, simply maintaining global misery.
Sometimes an encouraging ray of hope appears - such as the Google Lunar X Prize:
One bold ambition of the project: using lunar materials to make solar power collectors that can generate carbon-free energy, which is then transmitted to the Earth.
Private enterprise challenging private enterprise advances technology. Goals that grow private enterprise result in more employment while goals to grow the union base and socialistic goals result in less employment and greater misery.
What makes more sense - budgeting $35.3 Billion for the International Affairs Budget (bribes to leaders of other countries - as Congress has in their FY08 budget) or directing that sum (or tax breaks) to private enterprise in a challenge to create combustion free energy sources, creative health solutions, etc. - all of which translates into jobs, advancement of the human race, etc.
The computer you use now was NOT brought to you by big government, but by creative and innovated private enterprise.
The internet we all rely on was not part of some government budget to create an internet (as Al Gore claims), but the result of private research and development.
No politician or group of politicians, no union, or any global socialist movement has, are, or ever will, advance the human race into a better age.
Vote for Ron Paul - to restore America to the land of the free.
